It says that the rapid development of technology is surely one of the signs of progress in today’s society. But in spite of its progress there is the possibility that would cause violence, cruelty and brutality that would cause harm to others specially the innocents. Such as the new inventions of hi-tech devices, bombs, guns and other instruments of destruction to one’s life. However the church finds a precious aid for spreading the word of the Lord that is through video presentation or power pint. Now, is it being put to practice? Are they able to make a PowerPoint that clear and to people? Or this PowerPoint pleases only the eyes of people. What is the use of having a PowerPoint during Eucharistic Celebration? It is simply like this, to animate people who are not participating as well as the ignorant. The common mistake of making a PowerPoint is, it has many colors that people may immediately notice during the liturgy. There are also a lot of movements as regard to the text, they make use of slides that is very attractive which also caught the eyes of people and the tendency people are no longer focus on the celebration but on the movement of the slides and text. The best color to be use in power point should be black and white for the reason that man’s eyes are stimulated by color and movements. As regards to power point making, people should know the modus operandi on how to be a good power point presenter.

First is significance. In making a power point one should not only passing the information or because our teacher told us to do such power point. We should create meaning out of it. We should be energetic of what we are presenting otherwise our listeners is dead. Followed by structure, it should be convincing and should have a memorable introduction as well as conclusion. Followed by simplicity, as what our good friend Albert Einstein told us that ‘everything should be made as simple as possible but not simpler’. Lastly, people who are making power point should have a time for rehearsal and with this modus operandi I think it should lead us to be a good power point presenter. Also we are able to know the appropriate use of this new technology.

The Church and Internet

In this particular document we are basically going back to the right use of media (internet). And the church considered internet as a gift from God. For the reason that internet can be a tool to spread his words of wisdom (Gospel). Internet is a world wide web so it will not be very difficult part for the preacher’s of the Gospel to go to different places. They can preach with the use of this media. All that they have to do is to encode all the information that they have in a particular website. But the tendency of this spreading of the word of our Lord Jesus Christ is somehow passive. It is because in internet, all that you see there are only the words, animation, colors etc., just to attract the viewers. Thus, it is very literal. Unlike the speaker or preacher itself, there you will find the intention of the preacher, the intonation of his voice, the way he pronounces each word. All these can be considered as verbal communication. What do we mean by internet? On the part of the author he considered internet as primary tool of gathering information easily. But we cannot put 100% assurance of it. For the very reason that from time to time it is being edited by the author itself. How can we consider its validity and relevance? Of course we have to consider the capability and the background of the author. Now we go back again to the right use of media. We will ask, what is really the right of media for? Of course it is for our development. Because we Filipino’s in particular my co-seminarians, they no longer have the sense of improvement on what they are doing namely, spiritual, emotional, physical and practical. What am I emphasizing here? Simple this, they do not have any improvement at all as regards to the use of internet also. However it is important to all of us to understand the purpose of internet, for the very reason that it would be very easy on our part to communicate and relate effectively to the young ones in particular the youth. It is for the reason that the youth are more familiar of the use of the internet, they have the more experience on this. Thus, they are the masters of it. We have also to insert the subject or course media education to all college universities, high schools and even in elementary level for them to be aware of the proper use of internet. Students in the elementary level and high school are badly affected by internet. Unlike college students who are busy with their studies can simply deal with this problem. We should encourage the youth not only in terms of, on how to be a good Christians but we have to teach them to be active on the use of media. For some are media illiterate. However, internet has its positive side and that is to have a relation to other nation, understanding the culture of other culture. By understanding its particular culture is coming to understanding of one’s life. Internet carries relation, information and teaching. By using the internet, the good news of our Lord will be heard and read all over the world. Moreover, we have to put our focus on the parents. We have to teach them strictly in the field of internet. Now a day their children are more well-informed in using the internet. This is supposedly the task of the parents. We should have the so called “professional training” to require a manner of communicating that speaks to the sensibilities and interest of people in a media culture. So that when we talk to the youth, we avoid misunderstanding on their part. Our speech, pronunciations, and skill of communication should be perfect. We should have that “first impact” to the youth. Meaning to say, we have to catch their attention with our first thought.

ethics in advertising

Is there still morality in advertising? Maybe for some they still have it. But for other advertisements, morality fades away. Bu what do we really mean here of advertising or advertisements? What is the main purpose of advertisements? On my part, advertisements mean announcements, public notice or commercial. Advertisements are not only giving information but it persuades and motivates us to buy their particular products. These advertisements at times trigger some of us in terms of the products that we have to to purchase. For this reason, I think it is but proper to us to acquire the attitude of automaticity in media literacy. So that when we have our weekly or daily shopping, groceries and marketing we are able to save our time and efforts from choosing other products. For the reason that you already have the brand name of the products you will purchase. In addition, we stay away from the traps in media namely; information fatigue – (bombardment of information) feeling of being inform, false sense of control (limiting our choices) and lastly faulty belief (we have to be aware that media/advertisements is/are here because of money). Moreover, some advertisements are simply deliberately untrue. Some advertisements are obviously unrelated to the product they are advertising for some has its abuses. In particular the commercials PONY (rubber shoes) wherein there is a woman crawling dressed in “two-piece”. And once the shoes appear on the screen then it will followed by the sexy woman crawling towards the direction of the shoes. We go back to the statement by which some advertisements are simply deliberately untrue. One example of this was the experience of my cousin and I as regard to a particular product which is head and shoulders. According to the advertisement Head and Shoulders is the number one anti-dandruff shampoo. We try it since both of us are curious with the product that is being advertised. Unfortunately, it even produces more dandruff on our part. Well, what I am trying to emphasize here is that, the capacity of a particular product is in fact not applicable to al users. So why consider it and announce it to the public as the number one anti-dandruff shampoo? Again it’s all about money. We let our selves fall form their traps. So here is the morality in advertising there? Let us consider that it help, but only for some. In spite of these reactions, we do not mean here eliminating advertisements but to locate in a very sensible way.

100 years of cinema

As parents is it really necessary to let your children to watch a movie on that so called teleserye? Well, it is just for relaxation or refreshment, then I consider it, granted that parents and teachers with their methods are to guide and explain to them everything about they have seen but until when and how often? “Creating a greater awareness in parents, to encourage then to surprise their children’s approach to TV as much as possible “Here we are going back again to the question, “who are responsible in this kind of situation?” of course there are no other than but the Parents and members of the Family. Children of today cannot be easily detach with their daily teleserye. Examples of this are Dyosa of ABS-CBN and Luna Mystika of GMA. Instead of studying their lessons, making their homework and projects, the time for their study period is being consumed. Much more when the KOREAN, MEXICAN and CHINESE film arrived that has been translated to Filipino version. Majority of the young ones would stick to it. And then the tendency of these foreign films is to imitate by the young ones when it comes to hairstyles, emotions and the way they dressed and act. On the contrary, why is it easy for these young ones to adapt or to accept a foreign film? Why not appreciate Filipino film instead of appreciating other culture? Should I say: it should be our culture first before others. Because this teleserye, telenovela or koreanovela are often being misunderstood by the young ones as Real due to lack of guidance of their parents. When I was a kid my mother always reminded me of looking on the signs and symbols presented in TV in particular the PG (parental guidance) and GP (general patronage). I remember when my mother immediately changes the channel for the reason that I was 12 years old then. Because what I am watching is PG 16. In addition, the cartoon characters Tom and Jerry has been mention in the article 100 years of cinema saying it is somehow advisable among the children. But if we are going to analyze it, VIOLENCE dominated. Children might imitate those funny characters and apply it to their playmates. Again Tom and Jerry is seen as the very foundation of violence in the eyes of the young ones. Lastly as regard to the weekly telepanstasya, koreanovela, telenovela or teleserye in particular the teleserye Maria Flordeluna wherein at the end of the story The Protagonist Maria Flordeluna who was a child died at the last part. Is there any effect of the death of Maria Flordeluna? Yes! There is! In fact, in an unknown province there was a girl who commits suicide for she was unhappy of the end of the story. For her idol Maria Flordeluna died. This girl probably really takes the film seriously. Where are the parents or guardian of this girl? Were they able to advice their daughter that, this teleserye is just an “acting?” that not all you see in TV is for real. Even the so called reality show, we cannot put 100% on it that all that is being presented on TV is REAL. Is the so called reality show really a REALITY? What do you think?

In a modern world of technology, people tend to stop thinking about the main principle and the appropriate use of media. It is because here we see an abuse of the people involved regarding to the use of media, doing needless things. And if they continue to their routine and to their wrong doings, tendency is that children of tomorrows would also get used to it, it is because that is the way they see the make use of media. What I am trying to highlight here is simply to learn the proper use of media.

However, this can be only solve if we help one another. We could also ask the help of group of people, namely; the religious people, those who are in Catholic Schools and Universities to offer courses in technology and communication so that people would become more attentive of it and also to support the programs on media education. Because it will assist us more to be critical in the same way systematic. “people are untouched by the impact of media upon religious and moral attitudes, political and social systems and education” why is this so? Maybe it is for the reason that there is lack of information, training and as well as orientation on using the media. It does not catch the attention of the people. So who would be pleased about it?

pornography and violence

Materials of pornography are truly widespread all over the world that can be easily seen by the people. These pornographic materials caught or trapped the attention of the people in particular the young ones. They are the one primarily affected by these pornographic materials. In a strict sense, this is the responsibility first and for most of The Parents. Parents should be the one to orient their children about sex. But what is the problem here in the Philippines is that, “sex is taboo”. On my part the children of today are just “curious” with regard to sex. It is because for the reason that no one among of their family has the initiative of opening the topic, there is no one explaining and there is no one orienting. As it is stated in “Pornography and Violence” parents must re-double their efforts to provide for the sound moral formation of the children and youth. This includes inculcation of healthy attitudes toward human sexuality based on respect for the dignity of every person as child of God, on the virtue of chastity and on the practice of self discipline. It is really the duty and task of the parents to take good care of their children because if not, their children could be one of the victims of pornography.

Parents are the first tool to protect the young ones against pornography. Second are the teachers and professors, because they stand as our second parents. Bur what is happening sometimes is that some professors are involved in this kind of pornography. Some of them are abusers that they take the opportunity to use their authority especially when the final exam is approaching. I hope you know what I mean. But anyway let us just live this issue. However, the most important tool is the church leaders and religious groups through their teaching of the faith and of objective moral truth about sexual morality. For they have the strong authority in the name of God.

communio et progressio

The media of social communication can really contribute a great deal to human unity. But our main concern here is that the fact that “men’s minds and hearts are ill disposed” that they are not able to se the positive functions of social communication. With that, I cannot anymore believe with what the late Dr. Jose Rizal had told us that “the youth of today are the hope of one’s country”. Their ill disposed mind and hearts will lead them to do evil things. They would rather go to the computer shop and spend a couple of hours there instead o going to school. Well, it is just how their parents discipline and took care of them. Look at me now I also undergo with the same situation that my friends would also invite me to go with them but what I did is just a matter of MODERATION. And that is how my parents disciplined me. They teach me to do things always in moderation. I think we should not blame the children of today in committing mistakes for they too also are innocent ant they need someone that would guide them to the right path. Especially “the parents” they should be the first to lead them to the right path fro the reason that it is their responsibilities as a parents. It is their primary duty to teach their child to acquire virtues as a Christian.

Public opinion

It is very easy to give an opinion but it is quite difficult to make a decision from different opinions. Because there are some shallow and profound opinions. This is practically what happens in our society. There are only a lot of opinions or should I say initiative but no decision or act. That is why there is no improvement at all. Because some of these opinions are not really true, accurate and clear. Because clarity and accuracy are necessary in order to arrive in a particular decisions.

Media is scattered everywhere, can be seen everywhere and can be use everywhere but what about the PROPER use of this media? How do you rate people using the media? Would you go for a hundred percent of it? Let us pray for the improvement of our society in particular the use of media.

The Guide to the future Priest…

I do not know if I will become a priest sooner or later. But I am always praying to our Good Lord to be His Priest and Servant and if that time comes I don’t think I would be using some instruments of social communication for the reason that I am not fond of those instruments. We’ll just see it when I become a Priest.

I was a little bit struck by the phrase “future priests should be trained in the seminary in the correct use of these instruments” what is being emphasized here is that seminarians should be good in social communication that all these media or instruments should be properly used. Before I thought that a Bible at your side is good enough to announce the word of our Lord Jesus Christ to His chosen people. With the help of social communication it would now be easy for us to have an apostolate with other people through the help of this media. “to train those concerned in the correct use of instruments of social communication” I think we don’t only have to train those who are concern but also those who are not concern to appeal to them that there is a correct way of using these instruments. These instruments are made for a very special and good purpose. But what other people are doing with these instruments? Are they taking care of it? Are they using in a good and civilized way? Some people of today are not anymore aware of the functions of these instruments for the reason that they already bought this thing or owned this thing and do everything they want. Whether to throw them after used or destroyed it whenever they want. “to train them and to be guide of others” we need to train other people especially the young ones to be considered as masters and guide of others so that all the knowledge that they have acquired from the very start will also be teach by these young ones to the next generation. We have to educate them to use these media not only for the purpose of entertainment but the most important is to instruct them that media is for information and to sharpen their minds and make them aware of cultural and social growth. We do not have to spoil the children of today to use the computer not knowing their purposes. Tendency is that they will be more expose on the images that is being provided by the internet and surely it would affect them in their day today activities. That is also the reason of escaping their classes; they play and play at the same time pay and pay. See, it we would not teach them the proper use of these instruments abuses will surely follow.

Let us all have the enthusiasm of educating them on the proper use of these instruments; So that later on we would not blame ourselves if anything terrible happen.
